350 SF Bedroom + bathroom addition, Airbnb
The project concept was to design an addition to an existing home that accommodates the needs of a growing family while also functioning as a weekend Airbnb rental to generate additional income. The original 830-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bathroom house, located in City Heights at the intersection of two streets, provided a unique opportunity to create separate, private access for the addition from one street, while maintaining the family’s primary entrance from the other.
Because the Airbnb unit was integrated as an addition to the primary residence, it was exempt from San Diego’s short-term rental licensing requirements. Furthermore, the addition enhances the property's resale value, allowing it to be marketed as a rare three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in this established neighborhood.
The design emphasizes a series of deliberate contrasts: old versus new, light versus dark, and high versus low. At the same time, it maintains a cohesive relationship with the original structure through thoughtful material choices, such as budget-friendly asphalt shingles, which complement the existing roof. This approach balances functionality, aesthetic appeal, and practicality for both current and future uses.
